Design Process

This project was challenging due to that fact DocuSign is not a payment process company and doesn't want to include payment process as one of our services. How can we have secure solutions not only during payment process but also to protect users payment data after the payment?

I started doing some research to understand how online payments got processed, I was able to find a company called Stripe, which happens to be a company where I had a contact. DocuSign agreed to my suggestion to focus on process agreement and work with payment gateways.

User Research

User Research

Our first design approach is add an extra page after each user's document. DocuSign has many different user cases and some documents are more sensitive than others. We tried to create a seamless flow by letting users request signature and payment. From study results, most users want to have 100% ownership of their documents. If we add a payment page right after a document it would make it seem like we added content to the senders’ agreement.

After re-thinking the whole sending flow again, we decided to have the payment process start after a signer finishes the signing process.

We started by interviewing our current clients and selected eight of them as to test our beta release. After one-month of beta release we officially launched DocuSign Payment to all Business Plus customers. We reached $ 1 million transaction within a month and $ 2 million transaction within one and half month.

After DocuSign Payment launched, we continue to perform on more user studies on different payment features.
